IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

Hello everyone! today i´m starting this blog about the analysis of the costumes in different films.
I will start with one of my favorite directors Mr Wong  Kar Wai. I love his films, they are visually amazing!
Last night I saw "in the mood for love", an extraordinary film, i loved the story, but most of all i loved the way in which the costumes and the art of the film work together. The colors that appear in the film are wonderful. The costume designer of this film is William Cheung Suk Ping. The ellegance shown in the costumes of the leading lady is unique.

Here is a sequence of Mrs Chan costumes throghout the movie. We can see that she starts with darker colors and as the movie develops; the colors of the dresses get brighter as well as Mr Chow´s ties. All the gowns have the same structure: high neck, length to the knees and showing her sensual body. This shows how structured her mind is, she is always trying to appear happy and is always caring about what the others may think. I think this is clearly shown in the costumes of the leading lady. Another thing that i have noticed is that in the final scene she is wearing a new dress that has never been seen throughout the movie, I believe this has to do with the fact that she has moved on with her life into a  new period, her maternity.  This called my attention, because thrigh the whole movie you can see that she repeats the dresses she wears. Here is a picture of the final dress, and by the way, you can appreciate that the colors are really bright.

Another thing that is important in this movie are the accesories, because that is the way in which the leading characters confirm the romance of their respective couples. Mrs Chan has the same purse as Mrs Chow; and Mr Chan has the same tie as Mr Chow. There are also some zooms into Mrs Chan´s hand showing her wedding ring, remembering the audience of her husband. here are some pictures of this.
Flowers are present throught the whole movie, we can see them in Mrs Chan´s accesories and dresses as well as in the art of the rooms and Mr Chow´s ties.

Finally what i loved most about this movie is how the costumes and the rooms work together giving us beautiful images. When Mrs Chan is at the office the colours of her dresses and of the room match perfectly. There is an interesting game between her dresses and the ties of the men in the movie, as well as with the ties and the art of the rooms. Her dresses appear in rooms where the courtains and the lamps have floral motives.

Hope you liked my point of view of the costume in the movie "in the mood for love" by Wong Kar Wai
Next time.... " great expectations"

see ya
